On Wednesday evening, direct rivals SC Magdeburg had briefly overtaken top spot in the league with a 35-27 win against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
Thanks to their win tonight, however, the Foxes restored the old ranking - and now go into the season finale on Sunday at Rhein-Neckar Löwen in pole position.
A win there would secure them the championship trophy for the first time in the club's history. At the same time, SCM will face SG BBM Bietigheim.
The Berliners are unbeaten in 18 games, have won 16 of 17 home games this season and are one point ahead of the defending champions Magdeburg going into the final matchday. They are also already guaranteed a ticket for the upcoming Champions League season - they have a three-point lead over third-placed MT Melsungen.
Gidsel excels as always
World handball player Mathias Gidsel was once again leading scorer with eleven goals. "It was an outstanding performance from us today," said the Dane: "We have said that we are ready for this championship. The only thing missing is the final in Mannheim."
However, the game got off to a bumpy start from Berlin's point of view as the league leaders made many technical errors and missed open goal chances.
It took Füchse 20 minutes to settle into their usual style as they opened up a clear 15-10 lead for the first time which was extended to 22-15 by the break. The Berlin team continued to dominate the game against Gummersbach in the second half.
To the match centre: Foxes vs. Gummersbach
Like Magdeburg, Füchse are also in the Final Four of the Champions League (14/15 June in Cologne). Winning the title there would also be a first for the capital club.
