On the opening day of the men's Floorball competition at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, Finland set a new world record victory in men's international matches, thrashing the host nation 42-0.

The crushing victory eclipses Finland's previous record of 38-0, set against Ukraine in 2014.

But what is more humiliating for China and impressive for Finland, is that matches in the competition are being played over three periods of 15 minutes, instead of the traditional three 20-minute periods.

The 12th World Games - the biggest multi-sport event for sports not part of the Olympic programme - officially begins tomorrow, but the men's and women's Floorball competitions were among the events which got underway a day early.

Having won last year's World Championship, Finland's men were expected to be strong favourites against China as they got their Group B campaigns underway, in what was the first meeting between the two teams.

Finland hit double figures in the first 15 minutes, then won the second set 14-0, before going even better in the final period against their weary opponents, scoring 18 times without reply - better than a goal a minute - to complete the 42-0 final score.

Every single outfield player scored for the Finns, bested by Juuso Ahola who scored six ahead of Joona Rantala and Luukas Hyvärinen with five each. Juho Repo could not have asked for a better international debut, as he scored a hat-trick.

On Friday, Finland face Canada before completing their group matches against Czech Republic. The Czechs beat Canada 29-1 earlier today.

In the women's competition, Finland were also completely dominant against Canada, winning 36-0 and falling only one goal short of the women's international record, 37-0, which they set in 2019 against Austria.

They may have another chance to set a new world record on Friday when they face Singapore, who were beaten 21-0 by the Czech Republic in Group B.
