Dutchman Fabian Holland has become the first Dutchman in history to have received his first call-up for the All Blacks as the former world champions announced their squad for the 2025 Lipovitan-D July Series against France.

The 22-year-old Akersloot-born lock moved to New Zealand at age 16 to pursue a rugby career, starting at Christchurch Boys' High School and later playing for the University of Otago

Holland, who arrived in New Zealand at 2.04m tall, is active for Highlanders, the last-placed side in Super Rugby, and has played for all of New Zealand's youth teams.

In rugby union, players are allowed to play for countries other than their country of birth if they've lived there for at least give years.

The born Dutchman received his first call-up for the All Blacks' three fixtures against France in July, thus becoming the first Dutchman to be called up for the three-time world champions.

Blood, sweat and tears

Holland told NOS what his first call-up meant to him.

"It still feels a bit surreal. The past 24 hours have been pretty hectic, but now I've 'landed' again and I'm going to prepare for the training camp that starts on Wednesday."

Playing for the All Blacks has been a dream for Holland since seeing the All Blacks 7s at a training camp at his old club, Castricumse Rugby Club. Now, he gets to represent the jersey he's long dreamt of wearing.

"I want to leave my blood, sweat and tears in the black shirt. I have high ambitions and still have a long way to go to achieve them. I am extremely proud to wear the silver fern on my chest," Holland told NOS.

'Special day'

All Blacks coach Scott Robertson called up five new names for the games against France. Besides Holland, Robertson has called up hooker Brodie McAlister, prop Ollie Norris, loose forward Du'Plessis Kirifi, and midfielder Timoci Tavatavanawai.

"For the five uncapped players, this is a particularly special day," said Robertson. "These players have all impressed us with their talent and work ethic and have earned their opportunity to be part of this All Blacks squad.

"We know that each of these players possesses the ability to make their mark in the black jersey and we look forward to working with them over the coming weeks."

The All Blacks play France on July 5, July 12, and July 17, starting with a game in Holland's home town of Dunedin.
