Iga Swiatek reaches only her second semi-final of the season after defeating Diana Shnaider, 6-2, 6-1, on Tuesday, completing the rout in just 64 minutes for her quickest win of the campaign. She has also equalled her best tournament result with her 2023 semi-final finish in the Montreal leg.
Swiatek has fallen as low as No. 8 in the rankings after enduring a season of almost-weekly disappointment. She arrived in Toronto without back‑to‑back wins in four of her last seven tournaments and failing to go past the quarter-final at any event except Rome.
In response, the Pole crushed Sara Bejlek and Viktorija Golubic in straight sets and later rallied from a set down to knock out Marta Kostyuk, avenging the recent Roland‑Garros fourth‑round defeat. She can at last aim to win five matches in a row for the first time in the season.
Elina Svitolina faced a deficit in the quarter-finals but rallied strongly to set aside Ekaterina Alexandrova, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, to extend her rich vein of form on hard courts. It was her second comeback win of the week, having survived a near three‑hour tussle against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Coco Gauff must have breathed a sigh of relief after learning of Belinda Bencic's walkover from their quarter-final match. To be fair, the American is looking in supreme form in Toronto after winning her first three matches in decisive straight sets, including beating Alina Korneeva and Maria Sakkari.
While she has been equally productive elsewhere in the season, Gauff hasn't quite excelled in the latter stages of tournaments. The 2025 Wuhan champion has not won a title this season, but at best reached the finals in Miami and Rome and the semi-finals in Dubai and Wimbledon.
Elena Rybakina spent most of her quarter-final match against Naomi Osaka coming from behind, including dropping the first set, going a break down in the second set multiple times, and standing two points from defeat in the tiebreak. Finally, she emerged victorious, dismissing the 2025 finalist 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Rybakina has been putting out fires throughout this campaign, including edging out‑of‑form opponents such as Daria Kasatkina and Liudmila Samsonova in three sets. Nevertheless, this is an acceptable campaign after landing in Toronto without multiple wins in three of her last four outings.
The former Wimbledon champion was nothing short of imperious on hard courts earlier in the season. In addition to winning her second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, she came a point away from becoming the champion in Indian Wells and later reached the semi-finals in Miami.

Rafael Jodar enjoyed a dominant run in hard-court Challenger events during the second half of 2025, mostly in North America, which gave him confidence and accelerated his development into the player he is today. This year, he appears ready to replicate that success on the main tour.
He started the US Open Series with a superb run to the final in Washington last week and has now put himself one step away from repeating that feat in Montreal. He has lost just one set on his way to the semi-final, while recording notable wins over Lorenzo Musetti, Jiri Lehecka, and Arthur Fils, showcasing his dominant form and supreme confidence.
The tour has witnessed several sensational rises in recent years, particularly in the post-COVID era, but Jodar's current ascent arguably eclipses almost all of them. Just 12 months ago, he had little to no tour-level experience, and even at the start of 2026, he was still playing qualifying matches at the Canberra Challenger.
His remarkable surge over the past few months has now taken him into the top 20 and to the cusp of a top-10 debut, which would be a remarkable achievement. He is up to No. 11 in the live rankings and has a real chance of breaking into the top 10 at this tournament.
Brandon Nakashima will also be delighted with his start to the US Open Series, a phase of the season that has regularly disappointed him in the past. Despite being comfortable and well acclimatised to these conditions, he has often struggled to turn strong starts into quarter-final or better results.
However, he appears to have addressed that issue this year, reaching back-to-back semi-finals. He reached the last four in Washington, where he lost to Taylor Fritz in three sets, and has now repeated that feat in Montreal, setting up a clash with a red-hot Jodar.

As an American player ranked inside the top 20, it is crucial for Learner Tien to maximise these North American tournaments to sustain his ranking. His prospects looked bleak coming into Montreal, with his recent form underwhelming, including a poor showing in Washington last week.
He also made a shaky start in Montreal, but favourable matchups against out-of-form or physically compromised opponents helped him collect wins. That appears to have boosted his confidence, as he looked much closer to his best in the quarter-finals against Daniel Merida Aguilar, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
This Montreal run appears to have solved two problems for Tien. It has brought him back into form at a crucial stage of the season while also delivering the big result he needed at a high-profile event. Before this week, he had never gone beyond the quarter-finals at a Masters or Grand Slam, but that barrier has now been broken as he reaches his maiden semi-final at this level. The run has also lifted him to a career-high No. 13 in the live rankings.
Ben Shelton has won plenty of matches and titles this year, but his level has not matched what he showed over the last two seasons. His preparation for the title defence also offered little encouragement, as he lost a three-setter to Alejandro Tabilo in Washington last week.
He needed a statement performance to lift his spirits, and delivered exactly that in the Montreal quarter-finals, producing arguably his best match of the season to dismantle Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1 and knock out the only other Masters champion left in the draw. Every time Shelton has progressed beyond the quarter-finals this year, he has gone on to win the title, maintaining a perfect record in semi-finals and finals.
He has won three ATP titles this season, one each on indoor hard courts, clay, and grass. If he maintains that record in Montreal, he can claim his first outdoor hard-court title of the year and complete a title sweep across all four surfaces. Prior to this year, he had won just three ATP titles in his career, but he is now on course for a fourth title of the season.
