The New York Mets have signed first baseman Pete Alonso to a two-year deal with $54 million guaranteed, according to MLB insider Jeff Passan

Alonso, who spent all six years of his career so far with the Mets, is staying put in New York, where he will make $30 million in the first year as part of the deal that also includes an opt-out after this upcoming season. If Alosno stays for year two, he will earn $24 million.

Alonso was one of the few big names left in free agency who had yet to sign a deal, now leaving former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman as the top remaining free agent.

The four-time All-Star played in all 162 games for the Mets last season, slashing .240/.329/.459/.788 with 34 home runs and 88 RBI.

Alonso has now made an All-Star appearance in the last three seasons and is widely regarded as one of the best power hitters in baseball. The 30-year-old won NL Rookie of the Year in 2019 after breaking the Mets rookie home run record with 53, along with 120 RBI and a .260 batting average.

Then in 2022, the power hitter broke the Mets single-season RBI record after bringing in 131 runs.

Alonso is also a two-time Home Run Derby champion. In 2021, he broke the first-round record previously held by Vlademir Guerrero Jr. with 35 home runs.

However, Alonso has struck out at least 120 times in the past four years, almost breaking his career high of 183 this past season with 171.

Alonso was originally drafted in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Mets and currently has 226 home runs and 586 RBI for his career.
