In the first round, the formidable Thai player Kunlavut Vitidsarn found himself in serious trouble and on the verge of elimination before winning the third set 22-20, while former Chinese World No.1 Shi Yuqi was swiftly knocked out, losing 11-21, 10-21 to Loh Kean Yew.
Rasmus Gemke, who had enjoyed a stellar World Championship campaign, also saw his run end after just one match.
Gemke never quite recaptured the form he displayed in India, losing decisively in straight sets—17-21, 14-21—to Japan's Kenta Nishimoto.
