Hawthorn continue to make demonstrable and incremental improvement under Mitchell since he took over on an interim basis from Alastair Clarkson in late 2021.
In 2024, the Hawks made their first finals appearance in six years, going down to Port Adelaide in the semi-finals by just three points before going one better in 2025 with a 30-point preliminary finals loss to long-time rivals Geelong.
Currently in third place on the ladder with 14 wins from 20 games, including four in a row following last weekend's 16-point triumph over North Melbourne, the Hawks are currently well placed to challenge for their first Grand Final appearance since winning the flag in 2015.
Mitchell was a senior leader of the club under Clarkson and captain Luke Hodge in that period and his natural leadership abilities have been widely praised throughout the latter years of his tenure, whilst his ability to develop young talent has seen a midfield including Jai Newcombe (24yo), Josh Ward (22yo), Massimo D'Ambrosio (23yo) and Connor Macdonald (23yo) become one of the best in the competition.
Despite already being contracted through to the end of 2027, Mitchell's extension comes as little surprise - not just because of Hawthorn's steady improvement, but because the 43-year-old hinted last week that he was in smooth talks with club management.
Hawthorn CEO Ash Klein said Mitchell has had a "profound" impact on the playing squad in his time as head coach.
"We’re delighted to extend his leadership through to 2030," he stated in a media release.
