The ‘Greatest Show on Turf’ heads to the New Orleans Superdome on Sunday, February 9th as the Kansas City Chiefs look to make National Football League (NFL) history when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles looking to spoil the ‘three-peat’.

Flashscore will give you the rundown of everything you need to know heading into Sunday’s showpiece.

Who is playing in Super Bowl LIX?

In a surprise to no one who follows the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs have made their third straight Super Bowl after beating the Buffalo Bills by a score of 32-29 in the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship match on January 27th. The win came after yet another terrific season under head coach Andy Reid, where the Chiefs finished their regular season campaign atop the AFC West with a record of 15-2 during the regular season.

For the Eagles, it has been a similar road to New Orleans. After finishing the season with a 14-3 record and topping the National Football Conference (NFC) West division, they took down the Green Bay Packers and then the Los Angeles Rams before trouncing their divisional rival Washington Commanders 55-23 to win their third NFC Championship in the past seven years.

The Chiefs and Eagles met back in the 2022 Super Bowl, a game in which Kansas City started their current run of titles after they won 38-35 at State Farm Stadium. The only other teams to face off in two Super Bowls in a three-year span are the Bills and Dallas Cowboys, who played in consecutive Super Bowls in the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

Who will be the standout players in Super Bowl LIX?

There is only one player to start with here, as Patrick Mahomes - Kansas City's quarterback and star player - tries to lead his team to their third-straight title.

The Texas native has been imperious once again this season, and last week he threw one touchdown and no interceptions in the AFC Championship win over Buffalo. Mahomes has thrown at least one TD and no interceptions in 70% (14/20) of his postseason starts, nearly 10% higher than any of the other 35 QBs with 10+ career postseason starts (Josh Allen: 61.5%).

However, Mahomes had more of a down year this past regular season. His 3,928 passing yards was the fewest of his career and his 26 passing touchdowns tied for the fewest.

Just how important Mahomes is to the Kansas City offence is shown by their running game. Their longest run is 34 yards in the 19 games played this season (including playoffs).

If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, they would be the first team to do so after not having a 35-yard carry since the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008 (the longest carry of 34 yards). The last Super Bowl winner with a shorter longest carry was the San Francisco 49ers in 1994 (28 yards).

A player that Mahomes will be looking for is future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce. He has 31 catches in the four Super Bowls he has played in, two shy of tying Jerry Rice for the most receptions in Super Bowl history (33).

For Philadelphia, it's the opposite as their game will hinge on the performance of the running game. The Eagles rushed for seven touchdowns in the NFC Championship game, the most by any team in a postseason game in the Super Bowl era. Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts became the first teammate duo to each rush for three touchdowns in postseason history.

Barkley, since moving on from the New York Giants in the 2024 offseason, has been on fire, rushing for more than 2,000 yards for the first time in his seven-year career. If you include postseason yards, he will need just 30 more to overtake Terrel Davis’ 1998 record for the most rushing yards by anyone in NFL history in a single season.

Barkley is also the current favourite to win the Offensive Player of the Year award after leading the league with 2,283 yards from scrimmage (rushing yards + receiving yards) and putting up 15 total touchdowns.

He also has seven rushing touchdowns of 60 or more yards this season (four in the regular season, three in the playoffs), most in a season in NFL history.

Both teams have dangerous players that could lead to an explosive encounter where the scores will be close. Each of the last three Super Bowls have been decided by three points. That is tied for the longest streak of Super Bowls decided by single digits (also 2010-2012).

Where will Super Bowl LIX take place?

New Orleans will hold its 11th Super Bowl on Sunday, tying Miami for the most times it has been hosted by a city. The Superdome will be the stadium that will play host, the eighth time it has hosted, more than any other stadium. The other three Super Bowls that were hosted in New Orleans took place in Tulane Stadium (1970, 1972, 1975).

The last Super Bowl to be hosted at the Superdome was back in 2013 when the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 34-31. The game was best remembered, though, for a power outage that occurred throughout half the stadium, which forced the game to be delayed by 34 minutes and became a topic of discussion among conspiracy theorists considering the Ravens were dominating the 49ers beforehand.

The hosting of the Super Bowl is a process that starts with the NFL choosing a host city before that city has to put in a proposal that the 32 team owners will accept or reject. The process starts between three and five years in advance of the game.

In 2026, the Super Bowl will take place in San Francisco’s Levi’s Stadium.

Who will be performing the half-time show at Super Bowl LIX?

Kendrick Lamar, fresh off winning five awards at the Grammys, will be performing the now iconic half-time show in New Orleans.

The American rapper from Compton, California was part of the 2022 half-time show alongside Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige.

The national anthem - Star Spangled Banner - will be sung by Jon Batiste alongside Stephanie Nogueras, who will perform the anthem in American Sign Language (ASL).

What time will Super Bowl LIX start and what time is it likely to finish?

Super Bowl LIX will kick off at 18:30 ET, whilst if you are in Europe, the game will start at 00:30 CET in the early hours of Monday morning.

The average Super Bowl runs for three hours and 44 minutes, which does not include the 45-minute half-time interval.

The longest Super Bowl in history happened in 2017, which lasted four hours and six minutes, thanks to the New England Patriots coming back to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime.
