It was revealed on Tuesday that rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will get the start in the team's preseason opener on Friday, August 8th, against the Carolina Panthers.

Sanders was recently posted as the fourth quarterback on the Browns' depth chart, but now he'll get his chance to prove himself on Friday.

He's expected to take first-team reps during practice on Wednesday.

The announcement comes as a shock after Sanders was held from practice this past Saturday due to shoulder soreness. But, according to Sanders, it was all a matter of adjusting.

"It was just adjusting to starting and stopping honestly, that's all it truly is," Sanders said. "Sometimes you'll go in hot, then you'll wait for a second, then you'll get cold, then get back hot, then get cold. My arm and body wasn't used to that. It's just an adjustment within the body."

Cleveland's rookie is fighting in a tough crowd for the starting spot come Week 1 of the regular season. Sanders is looking to win the spot over fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, veteran Kenny Pickett, and former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco, who won the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year with the Browns after leading them to a playoff birth with an 11-6 record.

Sanders slipped to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft this season after the team originally took Gabriel in the third round.
