The team has released wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. to make room for Elliott ahead of the team's Wild Card matchup against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
"Competitors welcome at the Los Angeles Chargers," said head coach Jim Harbaugh. "Great to see him. He's here and he'll start having at it."
Elliott has only wracked up 226 yards and three touchdowns on 74 attempts this season for the Cowboys, showing that the back is well past his prime. He hasn’t put up over 1,000 yards on the ground in a season since 2021.
Still, the All-Pro running back could prove some depth for a team thin at the position that has seen injuries to both J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards.
The Baltimore Ravens signed Dalvin Cook last season during their playoff push for similar depth reasons, although he never saw the field. The Chargers could do the same for Elliott but it’s probably safer to assume he has a better chance of seeing the field more given Los Angeles' backfield injury woes.
