Fant picked up the injury on the practice field on Monday after he was blocked backwards and into a fellow teammate. The Cowboys' head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the injury diagnosis on Tuesday, stating the tight end will have surgery at some point in the next few weeks.
The 27-year-old was going into his fourth NFL season, all coming with Dallas. While he has only taken 14 offensive snaps in his professional career - none in 2025 - he has played a role on special teams.
Fant was primarily on the practice squad for all of last year, playing just once and making one tackle.
It is expected that the Cowboys will turn to Jake Ferguson as their first-choice TE, with Luke Schoonmaker, Brevyn Spann-Ford, and undrafted rookie Michael Trigg adding depth in the position.
