The Los Angeles Chargers named Trey Lance (25) as the starting quarterback for the Hall of Fame Game against the Detroit Lions on July 31st.
Lance will play into the third quarter before the rookie DJ Uiagalelei takes over for the rest of the game - keeping regular starter Justin Herbert on the sidelines for the exhibition game.
"He's had a heck of a camp," said Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. "I just want to get Trey Lance game experience. With his career and then in college, he doesn't have as much as most guys."
The Chargers signed Lance to a one-year deal worth $6.2 million to be the official backup to Herbert.
Lance, a former No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, went 0-1 (one start, four games) last season for the Cowboys and had previously started just four games for the San Francisco 49ers between 2021-2022.
