The Netherlands failed to convince in a pre-World Cup friendly once again, with Uzbekistan nearly snatching a win in Manhattan before being beaten by two penalties from Cody Gakpo, who scored twice in a 2-1 win for the Dutch.

The Netherlands concluded their pre-camp in New York with a friendly against Fabio Cannavaro's Uzbekistan, and manager Ronald Koeman took the opportunity to test a new formula on the right wing - Crysencio Summerville got his second-straight start, but this time with Denzel Dumfries behind him, with the latter having sat out his one-game suspension.

Summerville was the first to have a chance to score a Dutch goal in New York City, but with just the goalkeeper to beat, the West Ham winger took a heavy touch, squandering the wide-open chance for the Dutch.

After his woes from the Netherlands' first friendly loss against Algeria, Donyell Malen's worrying finishing form continued in New York City - Cody Gakpo passed the ball right in front of Malen, who had the chance to put it in a near-empty net, but almost impossibly put it wide of Utkir Yusupov's goal.

Tijjani Reijnders was the next Netherlands star to be given a golden chance to open the scoring, but also failed to do so after heading the ball far over the Uzbek goal from a very promising position.

Summerville was at the core of the Netherlands' next big chance after getting taken down hard by Jakhongir Uruzov and earning a penalty in the 30th minute. Cody Gakpo stepped up and slotted it into the bottom left corner, despite Yusupov getting a hand on it, to hand the Netherlands a deserved lead.

Uzbekistan, who failed to impress in the opening half, were lucky not to go down two goals before the break after Donyell Malen couldn't fire the ball at Yusupov following a quick counter, as well as being denied a penalty despite contact.

After a short injury scare for goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, the Netherlands created their first chance of the second half after Donyell Malen set up Cody Gakpo, who fired the ball over the goal.

In a somewhat slower and sloppier half from Oranje, Brian Brobbey seemed to have made the most of his cameo shortly after coming on for Malen, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Rollercoaster ending

Just as things did not seem to go against the Netherlands anymore, substitute Guus Til was sent after committing a handball twice in one go. Though it was close, a free-kick was given instead of a penalty, but the attempt from the edge of the box was fired high over the bar of Mark Flekken, who came on for Bart Verbruggen as a precaution after the latter's injury scare.

The ten-man Netherlands couldn't properly clear the ball in a precarious situation, which ended in despair for the Dutch, who conceded an injury-time equaliser via the raised foot of Igor Sergeev.

The Netherlands were inches away from still grabbing a win, but Tijjani Reijnders' toe punt was cleared off the line by the Uzbek defence. Summerville was also denied in the final seconds of the match, with his shot being saved by Yusupov at his near post.

An unbelievable injury-time period came to a fitting end when Jan-Paul van Hecke was pulled to the ground during a corner, giving Oranje a second penalty of the day. Cody Gakpo stepped up once again and sent Yusupov the wrong way to clinch a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan in the 98th minute.

The Netherlands' next test comes at the FIFA World Cup, where they'll face Japan in their Group F opener on Saturday, June 14th, at 22.00 CEST.
