Meerdink received his maiden senior call-up to the Netherlands after a good start to his season. The 22-year-old scored four goals and provided two assists in his last eight matches across all competitions.
The KNVB announced on Tuesday that Meerdink sustained an injury during training, meaning the AZ striker will not feature in this week's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Finland.
The young striker was poised to make his Netherlands debut against Malta after Memphis Depay couldn't make it to the Netherlands in time after having his passport stolen in Brazil. No replacement for Meerdink has been announced.
The Netherlands play away at Malta on Thursday, October 9th, before hosting Finland at the Johan Cruyff ArenA on Sunday, October 12th.
