Both with a recent glorious past at the Neapolitan club, the current strikers of Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are set to face off in a Turkish league that has never been so high-profile in terms of names and ambitions

A tank against a missile. That’s how the clash between Romelu Lukaku and Victor Osimhen could be symbolised, now leading the lines for Fenerbahce and Galatasaray respectively, two contenders for the Turkish league title. Both are classic number nines, even if the Nigerian doesn’t officially wear that number, and will lead the attack on the eastern and western sides of Istanbul. Like the prows of two warships vying for control of the Bosphorus, with Besiktas also in the mix.

The first clash between the yellow-reds and the yellow-blues will take place on October 25th at the Ali Sam Yen. By then, it’s likely the Belgian striker will have reached better form than he’s shown over the past year. The two former Napoli players are now the most representative faces of the two rivals on either side of the Turkish metropolis, which in recent years has become a true landing spot for players with impressive CVs.

Stars at the 'Maradona'

The two swapped places at the Azzurri club in the summer of 2024, when the Nigerian left the 'Diego Armando Maradona' stadium after various disputes with president Aurelio De Laurentiis. In his 133 total appearances in the blue shirt, Osimhen scored 76 goals and provided 18 assists, averaging an extraordinary rate of more than a goal every two games. The peak of his time in Naples was undoubtedly the 2022-2023 season, when he finished as the league’s top scorer with 26 goals, leading the Azzurri to their historic third Scudetto with his explosive runs and powerful headers.

The Belgian, who took the number 11 shirt because the nine was held by the Nigerian until the very last moment before his move to Gala at the end of the 2024 transfer window, was specifically requested by Antonio Conte, also in his first year at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. The duo of Conte and Lukaku, who had already excelled at Inter, repeated their success on their debut in Naples, winning the club’s fourth title thanks in part to Big Rom’s 14 goals and 10 assists, making him a unique catalyst for Napoli’s attacking play.

Their contributions were crucial to Napoli’s victories, as the club had never before won two Scudetti in three seasons, not even during the golden era with Diego Maradona on the pitch. However, their relationship with the fans was never idyllic, partly due to their strong personalities. While the Nigerian often showed his frustration to the point of being sent to Istanbul almost out of desperation, the Belgian left Italy near the end of last season to recover from a thigh injury without the club’s permission.

Redemption and validation

Today, both reside in the same city, which has always been a hotbed of football passion. Istanbul, where the European side in yellow and red (with the black and white of Besiktas also present) stands in geographical contrast to the yellow and blue of the Asian shore. A Belgian with deep Congolese roots and a Nigerian, both represent the resurgence of the African continent in Europe, even if it’s apparently on the periphery - a periphery that is striving to become ever more central.

The main difference between the two strikers lies in their career stage. Lukaku is 33 and is preparing to make the most of his final years. Osimhen, on the other hand, will turn 28 at the end of the year and is still in the prime of his physical powers. The first is more static and skilled with his back to goal; the second dynamic and devastating in open space. A Belgian with deep Congolese roots and a Nigerian, both symbolise the resurgence of African football in Europe.

Today, however, both find themselves on the edge of the continent where football is at its highest level. And after starring in top seasons in the Champions League, they now face off in a secondary league that, nonetheless, is attracting more and more elite players and raising the overall standard. While Romelu seeks redemption, Victor aims to confirm his status and finally earn a move to the much-coveted Premier League - the only real difference between the two.

Their rivalry across the Bosphorus undoubtedly enriches the Turkish Super Lig, a league striving to emulate the greatness of the empire that made it immortal.

Both have chosen to embark on a journey from a Mediterranean port, known for its emotional intensity and instability, to a capital of three empires that serves as an eternal bridge between two continents. The league may be less prestigious, but the historical and atmospheric setting is truly hard to match.
