There was plenty of energy on display from both teams in the early stages, with Anton Stach epitomising that most as he saw one shot blocked by Fabian Schar and then sent an audacious free-kick attempt wide.
Shortly after a delay due to a technical issue for a linesman, Gabriel Gudmundsson made a vital block to deny William Osula following a burst forward from Jacob Ramsey, upholding the end-to-end feel of proceedings.
As time ticked on, the ever-influential Stach hit another attempt wide shortly after the half-hour mark, before Dan James was unable to get a convincing connection on Gudmundsson’s low cross.
But even with the intent on display, the first shot on target came in the 43rd minute, when Jacob Murphy’s venomous strike was palmed wide by Lucas Perri, who was soon sent scrambling by a looping Schär attempt that eventually nestled on the roof of the net.

It was initially more of the same after the restart, with Jayden Bogle working space on the edge of Newcastle’s box but smashing his shot over the crossbar.
At the other end, Perri tipped another Murphy attempt past the post before dealing with an awkwardly deflected Kieran Trippier cross.
Both managers made a double change around the hour mark with Anthony Elanga looking the most likely to make a difference.

Even though proceedings were starting to wind down as the latter minutes ticked by, there were still opportunities for either side to snatch it, with Lewis Hall firing over the crossbar and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hitting an audacious attempt wide at the other end.
Nick Pope then got a foot to another Calvert-Lewin attempt as the deadlock remained intact.
A Leeds corner deep into injury time had the home faithful excited, and though it wasn’t quite the Hollywood ending they wanted, Leeds still went a 22nd consecutive home league match unbeaten, indicating how vital their form at Elland Road could be this season.
Newcastle’s underwhelming start to the PL season has now provided two goalless draws and a defeat.
