A hotly-contested match between Ligue 1’s European hopefuls AS Monaco and RC Strasbourg Alsace finished goalless, ending Les Monégasques’ run of six consecutive H2H wins.

Despite sitting second and sixth respectively, these sides were separated by a mere three points ahead of kick-off.

While Monaco showed the most intent early on, impressive defending was required at both ends with Andrew Omobamidele stopping Mika Beireth’s run at the second attempt before Christian Mawissa raced back to halt Emanuel Emegha.

The competitive edge remained and Maghnes Akliouche started to get opportunities, but he couldn’t get a clean connection on Caio Henrique’s free-kick delivery, before he saw a shot blocked and another saved.

Mamadou Sarr then did brilliantly to match Breel Embolo’s run and block the striker’s shot, before Doree Petrovic reached over the pair of them to retrieve the ball.

The goalkeeper also got a crucial touch on Embolo’s attempted ball across goal, moments before Philipp Kohn prevented Dilane Bakwa’s deflected cross from going in.

Biereth thought he had opened the scoring in the first half’s final seconds when he turned the ball home after Petrovic got a toe on Henrique’s shot, but the hosts’ joy was short lived as their left-back had strayed offside.

Omobamidele paid close attention to Takumi Minamino with the game remaining tight after the restart, with the loanee’s yellow card three minutes into the second half following four that were brandished during the first period.

Strasbourg had to wait until the 66th minute for their first shot of the game when Valentin Barco fired over having been teed up by Diego Moreira, but the Argentine worked Köhn moments later with an ambitious strike from range.

Soungoutou Magassa then dispossessed Barco and provided a pinpoint cross for Embolo, but Petrovic eye-catchingly tipped his header over and Denis Zakaria headed over from the ensuing corner.

Emegha thought he had netted a late winner but his jubilation was cut short after his goal was ruled out for offside, as Monaco saw their six-game winning run at home come to an end but secured a point.

Strasbourg, meanwhile, have recorded back-to-back draws and will sit fifth in the Ligue 1 table for tonight at least.
