A late-season resurgence has seen Dortmund climb into European contention, starting the contest in sixth with hopes of UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification a genuine possibility.
With momentum on their side, it took the hosts just three minutes to break the deadlock, netting through Guirassy, who collected the ball in the box and kept his composure to wrongfoot Kamil Grabara with a precise finish.
Soon after, an offside in the build-up meant that Andreas Skov Olsen’s back-post header wouldn’t have counted had he directed it on target, a chance which proved to be one of very few in a rather low-key first half.
Despite stealing an early lead, Dortmund were unable to build on their advantage before half-time, failing to carve out further clear-cut opportunities.
Far from dominant in the first period, Dortmund looked to impose themselves on the match after the restart.
As the hour mark approached, they did just that as Pascal Gross produced a moment of brilliance, executing an exceptional Cruyff turn that opened up the space to pick out Guirassy, who swept home first-time from close range.
Now playing with added confidence, the hosts were celebrating again thanks to substitute Adeyemi’s skillful dribble and emphatic finish, putting the game beyond Wolfsburg.
Just four minutes later, any lingering doubts were firmly put to bed as Adeyemi again displayed his tight control, carrying the ball into the box before netting a second on his 100th BVB appearance.
With the game now beyond them, Die Wölfe almost dug out a consolation courtesy of Mohamed Amoura’s bicycle kick, but there was ultimately no silver lining for the visitors.
An efficient display sees Dortmund leapfrog SC Freiburg, laying claim to the final UCL spot with just two games left, albeit having played one more than their closest rivals. As for Wolfsburg, an eighth consecutive Bundesliga encounter without victory (D2, L6) – the division’s longest current winless streak – leaves them 12th in the table with little left to play for.
