There were only five games in the National Hockey League on Wednesday, with both early matches requiring overtime and even a shootout in one of them.

Detroit Red Wings 3-4 Vegas Golden Knights (OT)

The Detroit Red Wings threw away a 3-1 lead against the Vegas Golden Knights to fall 4-3 in overtime, making it six losses in their last nine.

Reilly Smith put the Golden Knights in front early on before the Red Wings responded through Emmitt Finnie, Simon Edvinsson, and Alex DeBrincat. By the end of the opening period, Detroit had raced to a 3-1 advantage.

It stayed that way until midway through the third, when Ivan Barbashev got one back for the guests. With the fans at the Little Caesars Arena starting to get nervous, the pressure was starting to mount on the hosts in their hopes of holding on.

Those hopes were extinguished with 3:24 left as Mitchell Marner tied things up. That goal ultimately forced overtime, where Tomas Hertl scored the winner 2:11 in.

The Czech international's 24th goal of the season ended Vegas' three-game losing run as they hold onto fourth spot in the West. The Red Wings are fourth in the East with the loss.

New Jersey Devils 4-3 Toronto Maple Leafs (SO)

The New Jersey Devils piled the misery on the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 4-3 shootout victory at home.

In each of the three periods, the Leafs took the lead, only for the Devils to respond less than five minutes later. Matias Maccelli, William Nylander, and Matthew Knies were the goalscorers for the Buds, with Timo Meier, Arseni Gritsyuk, and Connor Brown getting the levellers for the hosts.

New Jersey mustered more than 60 shots on the Leafs' goal in the three periods plus overtime, putting constant pressure on Anthony Stolarz in the Toronto net. Still, overtime and ultimately a shootout determined the winner on the night.

Neither Nylander nor Auston Matthews could score for the Leafs, while Paul Cotter and Jesper Bratt were successful in converting their attempts for the Devils.

The win, which was a third straight, brought New Jersey one point back of Toronto in the East. Neither team are in the running for a postseason place, especially considering the Buds lost for the fifth game in a row.
